As a new trainer I am the first to admit I still have to find my own style. Am I going to be one of those 'in your face' style military-esque personal trainers screaming "GIVE ME ONE MORE REP"? Or those you see on the hideous Biggest Loser type diet TV programmes essentially fat-shaming the 'contestants', giving pretty poor dietary advice and only helping to further increase people's unrealistic expectations of what is possible.
I'm usually a quiet guy and a hard worker so that's what I expect from my clients - the hard work, maybe not the quiet bit - you can be as loud as you want!!! Set out what you want, understand why you want it, commit to achieving it, work. Work damn hard and you can achieve whatever you want, I know that simple truth after years of getting my diet 'right' (for me), losing over 5st and going from unfit to Ultramarathon Runner.
I also like to have fun. Working out is often portrayed as being so bloody serious. Why? Have fun with it, do crazy stuff, smile and laugh about it but focus on your goals and in achieving those goals
Anyway, to the main point of this blog post.....
During the group personal training session I held last night I'll hold my hands up and admit that I didn't quite get the intensity of the actual exercises right nor in the energy I was giving out which I feel affected my client's energy levels. A little light on the timings, the number of exercises, I was a little jaded after a busy weekend etc etc. Plenty of excuses! Perhaps that's where I needed a little bit of that in-your-face mentality, try to get things moving again, both for them and me!!
I underestimated the level my group was at as well. I know next week I can push them to another level. I know everyone got something out of the session be it some improvement in bodyweight work or learning new techniques & exercises and no doubt there will be a few aching limbs but I know that they could have done so much more. That's actually quite exciting for me as I know that they have made such dramatic improvements in just a few weeks and now I can really push them.
Hopefully they also take that main point away from the session - look where they started and where they are now! Lesson learnt for all. So onwards to next week for those in that group, who will no doubt read this and be be raring to push themselves even harder next time out!
I like to keep my group personal training sessions to a relatively small number so I'm able to give each of you some 1-1 time to making sure your form is right or you are pushing and stretching yourselves during every workout. My group sessions are a great option to get some personal training whilst keeping the costs down and are a great insight as to what you could achieve on a full blown 1-1 basis. Please contact me or check out my pricing page for further details, I look forward to working with you in the future.
