I have the pleasure of working with a number of different people, each with their own individual goals. Today I would like to introduce you to Christine who has been a member of One Mile In Fitness for over a year and has recently completed an incredible achievement by finishing a half-ironman, in the most atrocious of conditions!
If you've not heard of the ironman series of events before, Christine had to complete a 1.2mile sea-swim, followed straight into a 56mile bike ride, straight into a 13.1 mile run. CRIKEY!
We've been working together to focus on her upper body and core strength to help improve her endurance, her durability, her swimming power and to see some improvements in her posture in terms of running & cycling.
I recently sat down with Christine and had a quick chat with her about her exercise history, training for this event and what might be next.
Hey Christine! So you've recently got into endurance events, what were you doing exercise wise before that?
Pre-triathlon I was a keen horse rider, competing in Eventing from an early age but over the last couple of years I was doing less competing due to work and had started cycling to help strengthen an old knee injury. It all escalated from there!
Cycling turned into a couple of 'Go Tri's' (swim/run races) with Horsham Tri Club and soon after I found myself joining the club and entering my first sprint tri in May 2017.
What on earth possessed you to sign up for a half ironman?
I really love racing and training towards a goal so I just thought, why not! I try to do a new challenge every year, something that pushes me out of my comfort zone, a half ironman seemed like the obvious choice as I was enjoying the shorter distance tri's so much. A few too many gins at New Year and I was able to persuade a couple of friends to join me!
What do you think OMI Fitness has brought to your training?
Before joining OMI Fitness I had fairly terrible upper body strength. I knew I needed to do weights but had no idea where to start and to be honest the gym seemed a bit daunting.
Swimming has always been my weakest discipline but with Matt's guidance I've hugely improved my overall strength. The difference in the pool has been huge - in two years I've gone from struggling to swim 200m in a pool without stopping to actually enjoying the sea swim at a half ironman!
Not only that but my improved core strength is really showing through in my running technique and posture on the bike as well, an all round improvement!
How has OMI helped you meet specific goals?
OMI has been instrumental in helping me meet my goals. I've had two injury free seasons doing triathlon and I don't think my body would have held up to that without the strength work I've done with Matt. Injuries are something I've struggled with in the past but Matt ways makes sure what we do in gym compliments my other sessions and I've found it has made a real difference.
What would you say to someone training for an event that was thinking about using a personal trainer?
Having a personal trainer is a real asset if you're training for an event. Not only can they help structure your training but they are there for valuable advice and to push you that little bit further than you would on your own. It's great to have someone believe you can do it and to help you get there.
And finally, what's next for you?
After a busy year I'm looking forward to a quieter month before getting stuck into winter training. My results have improved loads this year so the plan is to try and continue along the upward trend and keep getting stronger!
Thanks for your time Christine and congratulations again for your wonderful achievement. It's been a real pleasure helping and watching your progress and I'm looking forward to working with you toward your next challenge!
Endurance athletes will often 'forget' to do any strength training which has a massive effect on their efficiency and their bodies ability to withstand the hard work they have to do to get ready for races. Christine is proof that a well constructed and executed strength and conditioning plan can really compliment the rest of training.
